Setting Up UPI on Zerodha Kite
Zerodha Kite is India's largest discount broking platform and offers one of the cleanest interfaces for applying to IPOs. To get started, you need an active Zerodha Demat account and a supported UPI app (like BHIM, Google Pay, or PhonePe) installed on your phone. The UPI ID must be linked to the same bank account mapped to your Zerodha account; third-party UPI IDs will cause your application to be rejected.
Before the IPO opens, verify your UPI ID in the Kite profile section to ensure a seamless bidding experience without last-minute technical glitches.
Placing Your IPO Bid Correctly
During the IPO window, navigate to the 'Bids' tab in Kite and select 'IPO'. Choose the desired IPO and click 'Apply'. Enter your verified UPI ID, select the investor type (Retail), and input the number of lots. It is highly recommended to tick the 'Cut-off price' checkbox. This tells the system you are willing to buy at the highest price band, keeping your bid valid even if the issue prices at the top.
While entering your bid, you can also view the current IPO subscription numbers to see how much demand the issue is generating among other Kite users and institutional buyers.
Tracking Mandates & Allotment
After you submit the application on Kite, you will receive a UPI mandate request on your phone. You must authorize this using your UPI PIN to block the funds. Once the issue closes, the registrar takes over to finalize the allotment via a lottery system if oversubscribed.
Zerodha will send you an email on the allotment day, but for instant confirmation, you should use an IPO allotment result checker. Just input the application number provided by Zerodha or your PAN number to see your exact status.
Common Zerodha Bidding Errors
The most common reason for rejection on Kite is authorizing the mandate from a bank account that doesn't belong to the Demat account holder. Another error is applying at the lower price band instead of cut-off. To ensure you are bidding for a winning horse, always cross-check the latest Grey Market Premium before locking in your capital.
Navigating the Console for IPO Reports
Zerodha offers a backend dashboard called Console. Here, you can track the complete history of your IPO applications, check the status of your bids, and view detailed reports of your allotted shares and listing day profits. It is an excellent tool for maintaining a disciplined IPO journal.
Using Zerodha Family Accounts
Zerodha allows you to link family accounts. While you can manage them from a single dashboard, remember that for IPO bidding, each family member must authorize the UPI mandate from their own respective bank account. This is the most effective legal strategy to beat the retail lottery odds.
Troubleshooting UPI Errors on Kite
Sometimes the UPI mandate notification doesn't arrive on your GPay or PhonePe app. If this happens on Kite, do not immediately cancel the bid. Wait 30 minutes, or manually open your UPI app and check the 'Pending Mandates' or 'Autopay' section to find the hidden block request.
Checking Mandate Status in GPay
In Google Pay, IPO mandates are located under the profile section in 'Autopay'. Here you can view active, pending, and revoked mandates. Verifying that the mandate says 'Live' or 'Active' ensures that your Zerodha bid is successfully registered with the banking system.
